History[edit | edit source]
Unlike in the Gummi fairy tale story where they have wings, they flew around in their Gummiberry Juice Powered flying machines. It didn't mention that they were also very rude, cocky, cunning and prideful. They were in fact the sworn enemy to the Ancient Gummies. 500 years ago, the Airiel's ancestors tried to conquer and enslave the Gummi Bears to make the juice in order to conquer the skies with their flying machines. When the Airiels' attempt have failed, the Ancient Gummies banished and marooned them, high and dry with no Gummiberry Juice on a floating island which became Airiel Island. The Airiels have since not changed their wicked ways, and would even lie and snicker to any Gummi Bear that would come to their citadel. Perhaps the Gummi fairy tale about them was intentionally written so to cover up their cruel past for Gummi Cubs.
In their debut episode "Top Gum", once Cubbi and Artie have landed on the island, they were then confronted and captured by the wicked Airiels, delighted of getting their hands upon a Gummi Bear. They then took him to see their king, but whenever he said that they were old friends to the Gummi Bears, the other Airiels would snicker and laugh wickedly, especially at the descriptions from the Gummi fairy tale book about them having wings. Though Cubbi was treated as a guest, Artie had his suspicions, and was even captured when he was eavesdropping to the Airiels' plans of following Cubbi with their flying machines back to Gummi Glen. They ransacked the place, captured all the Gummis there and took them back to Airiel Island, except for Cubbi who was confined to his room by Gruffi. They threaten to drop a Gummi off the island if they don't give them the Gummiberry Juice recipe so to power their Flying Machines in order to rule the skies once more. But thanks to Cubbi and Artie, they were able to destroy all of the Airiel's flying machines, sparing one large flying machine of which the Gummis escaped in. Whilst leaving, the King pleaded them not to leave the Airiels high and dry once more, only for Cubbi the state that "They'll probably meet again in another 500 years." The King's outrage was then dimly silenced out once the Island hid within the clouds once more.
